~...Rebecca had always been very close to her cousin Beth. Beth's parents were killed in a terrible carriage accident when she was just seven years of age and so it was that she had had come to live with her aunt, uncle and cousin Rebecca. They had grown up together since children, always visiting and always getting up to mischief.
But with Beth living with them, the two girls had become even closer, sharing everything, even their secrets. They were inseperable and over the years as they grew up, both girls landed themselves in more mischief than Rebecca's parents cared to remember. But, no matter how much mischief they got up to, Beth always owned up to the blame even though it was Rebecca's strong willed and adventurous ways that had landed them in the pickle. Last season the girls had "come out" as was the way of society to represent their daughters coming of age and eligibility for marriage. It was on that wonderful night that they had been introduced to many eligible suitors. But regardless of how charming and how good a "catch" these suitors were, both girls were positively bored with these men who treated them as if they were helpless, brainless women. That was until almost at the end of the evening when a very handsome man had walked into the ballroom. There was an audible gasp from all women present as heads turned in his direction. And so it was that they were introduced to the very rich, influential and so very handsome Captain Jake. Over the next two weeks the Captain had come calling on the two young beautiful cousins many times and even though both had always shared their secrets, since the Captain had come into their lives they had both come to harbour an uneasy silence between them where the Captain was concerned. Suddenly they had found that each was trying to outdo the other when they would ready themselves for his visits. There was a silent feud happening that neither would admit openly to each other and suddenly it was as if all those years of sharing secrets had come to an end. It was in the third week since their Debut that Jake (as he had implored both of them the drop the Captain title) had announced that he would be leaving the next day as he had business to attend to over the seas and would be gone for some time, how long, he wasn't sure. That was eight months ago and during those eight months the girls had drifted apart. They were spending less and less time together, preferring their own company and would often be found at opposite ends of the castle doing their own "thing". This behaviour had started to concern Rebecca's parents and when they were both asked about this over a family dinner, both denied that anything was amiss that perhaps Rebecca's parents were imagining it. They nodded silently but decided not to dwell on this and let the girls sort out in their own way, whatever it was that was causing this distance between them. This day had started out wet and windy and both girls were restless yet neither would spend time together. By mid afternoon the sun had come out in all its glory, drying the beautifully kept gardens of the castle and thats when Rebecca had decided to take her journal and spend the afternoon in the Arbour of Roses. Her favourite place, a place her mother would often find her, writing in her journal. It was almost dusk by the time she returned to the castle to freshen up and ready herself for dinner. When she had come downstairs to the parlour for pre-dinner sherry, Rebecca had noticed that Beth had not come downstairs yet. Her mother looked up as Rebecca entered the parlour and announced with a sparkle in her eyes, that dinner would be late as a guest would be joining them for dinner, a guest who was at this very moment talking with Beth in the turret. Tonights dinner would be a very special occasion indeed. Rebecca felt her heart constrict, she heard the deafening rush of blood in her ears.....surely this visitor was not Jake ....she thought to herself. No.....this can't be Jake!! She flew mid sentence of her mother talking out of the parlour. She had to see for herself. She raced as fast as she could holding her beautiful gown high above her ankles as she ran up the many stairs to the turret, her breathing becoming harder and harder as she felt her heart constricting with panic. As she made that last step into the turret, what she saw before her froze her into the shadows of the wall.....Jake was holding Beth in his arms and they were about to kiss. Rebecca's heart was being crushed by an invisible vice. An uncontrollable anger was rising in her throat, a bitter bile rising to the surface. This would be the day that changed their lives completely. This was the day that would inflict the consequences of "Unrequited Love"...~ Best seen in Full View Stocks: The clouds and the hair on the lovers were made by me with PSP. The light in this is superb, it even grabbed me from the thumbnail, and the composition of the whole piece is very strong! The "blue" tones add to the mood so well, and the little details - as always - are up to your usual high standard.
Very very fine work milady.
