~...She couldn't sleep. The moon was so bright this night it kept her awake and Merlin was just as restless.

Tomorrow it would be Mari's twenty-first birthday and a grand celebration was being prepared for her coming of age. She was excited but she was also scared. For her coming of age meant that it was time for her to be presented to society...and...that heralded her availability as a very eligible wife.
She was scared because she didn't want to happen to her, what had happened to her sister Sophie. Sophie was married to the very influentual and very rich Duke Worthington. But this marriage was not a marriage made in heaven. Sophie was very unhappy and often they spent most of their daylight hours together...sisters and best friends. Sophie wouldn't elaborate but had eluded to the cruelty of her husband. He was rarely home during the day but at night when he would come to Sophie's bedchamber.....well.....Mari had often seen that her sister was in obvious pain and discomfort during the days when they spent time together.
Just today, when her sister had taken off her gloves to have tea, Mari had noticed horrible dark bruises and burn marks on her wrists as she reached out to take her tea.
She had tried to find out how this had happened but Sophie almost ashamedly pulled her sleeves over her tiny wrists and changed the subject. But it was obvious she was in pain.

She worried so for her sister and now that her coming of age was upon her whereby she herself could find herself married, she worried for herself. Were all men like Duke Worthington? Was this what a wife was to expect? Would she be as unhappy as Sophie?

And as she stood in the magical light of the silver moon on this the eve of her debut, Merlin eyeing the bats as they flew out of the tower, she closed her eyes and made a wish. A wish that some how, some way Sophie would be released from the heartache and pain she had to endure and that she herself would be blessed by a union of love. A love that knows no bounds, a love that is gentle and sweet and full of rapture, a union that is bound by total and unconditional love.

This was her Heart's Wish...~
